COME AND BE INSPIRED WITH THE ASSIST BOOK CLUB

Would you like to be part of a book club with a spark of excitement and inspiration?

Really? A book club that is inspiring?

Yes, really!

When we say book club, what do you think of?

Well, let me tell you what it means to us at the `Assist Book Club’ … fun, inspiring, motivating, exciting, friendship!

To be fair, these are only a few of the words that spring to mind.

We don’t concentrate on fiction!

Please, don’t be put off!!!

Lizzy and I co-host the book club, and she says, ‘I would never of read anything other than fiction apart from for study purposes. The books I’ve read via ‘book club’, have helped me hugely. Whether that be dealing with stressful situations or understanding others more acutely and acknowledging difference.’

We read books that are inspiring, passionate, self-development books that have spark, enthusiasm and realism. There is such a range out there, but we love books that have a back-story. The author expresses their own views because of their own experiences.

As I said, please don’t be put off!

Lizzy was dubious about coming along, motivational & self-development books were not really her cup of tea & now she can’t stop reading and listening to them … to a point she was so far ahead of many of us that she became co-host!

One of the loveliest things about the book club is that concrete friendships have been formed, which has been instrumental in keeping us sane throughout lockdown and we welcome anyone who would like to join us.

“Reading forces you to be quiet in a world that no longer makes place for that” – John Green

Multi-task by listening to books

Remember, if you don’t have time to read (many of us struggle with work, kids etc.)  audible is a great way to get through some books.

You can listen whenever and wherever!

Many of us from the book club listen to books rather than reading, as this means we can get through so many more inspirational books by women and still get through our to-do list!

If you’d like to join the Assist Book Club, please go to the Eventbrite tab & sign-up, you’ll receive an email & we will add you to our what’s app group. We’d love to see you; we love hearing each other’s thoughts & different perspectives on the books we are reading.

We meet every 3 months, online at the moment, so if you don’t live in the North East of England. You can still come along and join us.

So, what are we reading at the moment?

When it comes to choosing the books, everyone can bring ideas to the table, in fact, we encourage it. We love finding out about new books & new authors. Some authors coincide with the Assist podcast group, such as, Caitlin Moran, ‘How to be a Woman’ was the chosen book for the first quarter of the year.

Some of our book clubbers loved it and finished it quite quickly, whilst others are still yet to finish! There is no pressure, if you’ve not finished a book by the time we move to the next one, that’s ok … we embrace everyone reading/listening with whatever works for them!

If you’re interested in listening to podcasts, pop over to Eventbrite and sign-up to the Assist Podcast Group. They meet every 6 weeks online. We encourage you to join both groups because we may listen to the same authors, the perspectives are different and it’s wonderful to hear the points of view from others.

So, this quarters (voted for) book is Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo.

Girl, Woman, Other, follows the lives of 12 different characters; artists, bankers, teachers, cleaners, housewives all aged between 19 to 93. It has said to be a ‘fierce novel’ relating to the lives of black families. Evaristo’s, passion shines through the novel with sharpness, energy & humour.

“Books allowed me to se a world beyond the front porch of my grandmother’s shotgun house… (and) the power to see possibilities beyond what was allowed at the time” – Oprah Winfrey
